Mourngul
This model was one of Games Workshop’s earlier models and was made in resin. Resin models are absolutely the most difficult models to work with because of the hours of prep time required to repair them. Resin models arrive with dramatic mold lines, bubbles, and a rough, bizarre surface. For this particular model, I had to address all of those issues using small files, a liquid gap filler, and, in some places, my Dremel tool. I basically filed and sanded the entire surface of this model before applying any paint.
This model originally comes gripping a dead horse, which I didn’t like since it’s the only gory sculpture in the entire army. I instead used a Dremel to completely grind away this horse, reshaping the lower fingers that contacted it, and created this ice burst scene that you see here.
I do love painting larger models like this. I was able to just focus on smooth transitions in the flesh and on my blending. I wanted the body to have a lot of high contrast, where the cracks got dark but the highest locations went to near white and then slowly transitioned to a medium green in the forearms and a dark black green in the hands. It’s a very intimidating looking model and very beautifully painted that I’m proud of.
