Dragon Teapot

Building this piece was purely reactive. I started with the theme of assembling raw components together, then embellished the finish with spheres, plates, and stitches. I enjoy the layering on the spout, the twisted flare on the lid, and the swoop of the handle.

The glaze was a combination of two glazes my professor’s wife had created: one named “Dragon Green” and the other “Gold.” I discovered this combination testing hundreds of glazes together in sample tiles. The order of its application was essential for its end result. I love its variety in how it brings out the iron from the clay body in the raised areas, transitions from an orange to moss green matte finish on flat areas, and pools as a swirling gloss blue to deep purples in deep areas.
